BOBBIE
I am
Pages
Lined with pink and blue
Ripped from binding
Fray on display
Not minding the margins
I am
Supposed to be writing a to-do list
But instead
I am pages
Half-thought out notes scattered
Writing unreadable
Fragments, bullets, doodles
Waiting in a queue to become a masterpiece
But never returned to
I am
In love with this one
And she loves me too
I’m sure of it
I think
I’m pretty sure
Her love is like:
DANI
I want to wrap you up tight like the stigma in an
unbloomed rose
I love your smile
Your grace
The blackheads on your nose
Ew, the fuck?
BOBBIE
Too much?
DANI
Yeah.
BOBBIE
Her love is like:
DANI
I love you and I don’t want you to go
BOBBIE
To college she means
DANI
I don’t know what I’m gonna do without you
Without your love being immediate
Fresh and there daily
I know this is for the better
But maybe just maybe
You can stay here
Go to school down the street
It’s not as good as that other school
But you’ll get to sleep in familiar sheets
In familiar hands
By familiar faces
There’s no reason to go to these far-off places
BOBBIE
Is what she wrote
In my pages
On the white
The in between spaces
Is what her love is like
To me
But that’s not exactly what she said
It’s not at all what she said
It’s what she means to say when her love comes out
like:
DANI
(Hard.) Stop moving your goddamn head!
BOBBIE.
As I sit between her thighs
She sits upon my bed
On the edge
Of her patience
Cause I’m a little tender headed
But I got dandruff
And need my scalp to be greased
But her love sounds like music
Like sunrays and peace
Or at least in my pages it does
(She slaps the back of his head.)
BOBBIE.
Damn, Dani!

So that was “Pages”. And that piece opens up the show and it’s point is to just establish this sort of connection that Bobbie has with the audience; and being able to break that fourth wall. And, it’s more of a lighter piece in thinking about how all the rest of the pieces play out. And the next piece is a piece that was actually cut from the play, but I still feel like it represents the work very well. And just it represents Bobbie’s sort of emotional turmoil and journey and what he’s dealing with. The piece is called, “Blue Boy”.

BOBBIE.
I spent three hours rearranging a chair
Convincing myself that my feelings were fair
Posted a thousand times so you knew what was wrong
But the message got lost in the lyrics of a song
Didn’t post at all just to see if you’d see
But I liked all your stuff, so you still heard from me
Didn’t eat for a week just to starve out the pain
Everyone was proud I lost the weight that I gained
Put on my backpack, but couldn’t get myself to class
The professor just failed me and didn’t even ask
Didn’t shower for a while, cause I didn’t see the point
So, I covered up the stench with joint after joint
Kept the lights off and bathed in the dark
It was cold, still and necessary and even kinda stark
Laid in my bed and drowned in my cover
Curled up like a fetus trapped in his mother
Held my breath till my brown skin turned blue
Held my breath for the life I’d been through
Started to breathe, but my color never came
Cyan, navy, indigo, but never the same
So, I’m just the blue boy
Sitting there without a smile
I’m just the blue boy
Who ain’t been black for a while
